If the people of Britain gave up booze, smoking and taking illegal drugs, led a healthier lifestyle, avoiding sugar and fatty foods, took more exercise, we could wipe billions off the NHS budget at a stroke. Do yourself a favour give up booze on New Years Day. Give your body a chance, we all die in the end but why bring that day forward.

Sue Slipman and Fiona McTaggert were also members of the NUS Executive at the time. I knew Fiona quite well when she was a member of Battersea Labour Party. Lord Dubs was MP for Battersea at the time. I knew him quite well. He was and remains a great bloke. I did not get on so well with Fiona. On one occasion she accused a friend of mine of being a drunk. She then turned up at the next GC meeting with a can of Lager in her hand. The word hypocrite came to mind.

Listen my battersea friends
A warning to all friends...be careful about drink driving as we are getting close to Christmas and Police are out there checking on people.
Last night I was out for a few drinks. One thing lead to another and I had a few too many vodka's and then went onto the cocktails. Not a good idea. Knowing I was over the limit, I decided to leave my car at the pub and took a taxi home. Sure enough, I passed a police checkpoint leaving the wandsworth, where they were pulling over drivers and performing breathalyser tests. Because I was in a taxi they just waved it past. I arrived home safely and without incident, which was a real surprise as I've never driven a taxi before and I am not even sure where I got it from...

I just watched a programme about the Southern Coastal Walk. It takes 6 weeks to walk. Probably take me about 6 months. It showed Linton, Lynmouth and Woolacombe. We went there on holiday when we were 16, five of us in a two man tent. Lucky we were good friends and definitely heterosexual. We met four girls Debbie, Fiona and two others whose name I don't remember. The boys paired off with the girls and I was left spare. I remember one of the girls who was not that bright saying "the stars look like smarties". It made us laugh at the time. We went to Woolacombe where we joined the pub we were in heading for the beach for an impromptu party. The police turned up and told us beach parties were not allowed. We had a laugh with the police and turned for home. Part of the pub group were Millwall supporters. I was talking to one of them. I think it was Danny Baker, the TV presenter and well known Millwall supporter. I said I know a Millwall player "Dennis Possee". His real name was Derek Possee. Well, I thought it was funny at the time. The only camp site that allowed us in was up a two mile steep hill. A sobering walk and we returned to our tent. Mac the owner of the tent reminded us that anyone who wanted to throw up should do so away from the tent. Mac of course woke up in the night, opened the flap of the tent and threw up. A very welcoming sight in the morning.
We used to get invited to parties by Debbie and Fiona in Amersham. Posh girls. I did the best out of the lads as the parties were awash with single pretty young women. I ended up going out a few times with a pretty young girl called Liz. One day we went to Windsor. Me Liz. Gerry, one of the boys, and Fiona. Gerry told a story about a boy called Vincent Hanna who claimed to have lost his virginity when he was 7. We asked Gerry how he knew Vincent, and Gerry said "He went out with my sister". Gerry was embarresed when he realised what he had said, and we all laughed our socks off.
One other story that comes to mind is the day I had 100.00 on a horse called Seagram that won at 3/1, probably my biggest bet at the time
I ended up in a pub called The Chandler. It's now a Vietnamese Restuarant, or it was last time I was in Battersea. I met a friend Neil Bath, the Chelsea Youth manager. I offered to buy Neil and his mates a drink to celebrate my winnings in The Raven in Batteresa Village. On the way there a car pulled up and two pretty punky girls asked me if I knew the way to Brixton. I said "I was just going there". In a minute, I was in the car heading to Brixton. We got to their friends house, a posh place. I sat in the lounge while the girls getting ready, surrounded by 7 little dogs jumping all over me. It was a surreal moment. We went to Leicester Square where we stopped at the Long Island Tea Bar. where we had a Long Island Iced Tea. We then went to the Hippodrome. I was going through a punky phase. I had my sister's disused long beige mac on. I had not shaved for days. For some reason the bouncers would not let me in. I told the bouncers "my boss will kill me if I let them in on their own. So coming across as an undercover Bodyguard. The bouncers relented and let me in. We went to the champagne bar. The waitress came over to our table dressed in a Tutu, and said you can't sit there unless you are ordering Champagne. I said "I've been waiting for two minutes". One of the pretty girls was started to get interested in me. partly as I was coming over as an eccentric millionaire. I was starting to fade though, so went home instead. It was about 3am now. I went to Waterloo station where I bumped into a friend Gordon. He was nearly as as wasted as me. We shared a burger and went our separate ways. I got home about 3.30am tired and emotional. Back up for 12 noon for a session with the boys. Just another quiet weekend in Battersea. I though I'd share some memories with you. Comments welcome.
I've just remembered the connection between the penultimate story and the final story was Pete Flowers, a teacher at my old school, a mate of Neil Bath's and Danny Baker. I guess, it's a small world.

Paul Nuttal wants UKIP to be the patriotic voice of Britain.
Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel: Samuel Johnson
Boswell tells us that Samuel Johnson made this famous pronouncement that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel on the evening of April 7, 1775.
